Baguio City commemorates 1990 killer quake with drills and inter-faith prayer

BAGUIO CITY, July 18 (PIA) - - Baguio led several disaster risk reduction and management drills, demonstration and other related activities in Burnham Park and Session Road Tuesday in line with the observance of National Disaster Consciousness Month (NDCM) and the commemoration of the July 16, 1990 killer earthquake that devastated the city.

Along the Juan De Luna Drive in Burnham Park, a short program opened an emergency exposition of Search and Rescue Equipment (SAR), a rescue Olympic, poster making contest, and a whole day blood-letting activity.

The Office of Civil Defense – Cordillera (OCD-CAR) also launched the Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan.

In the afternoon, the city government, in partnership with the various volunteer emergency groups, conducted simultaneous earthquake drill and evacuation exercise at Session Road.

An inter-faith prayer followed the activity. The winners of the rescue Olympics and poster making contest were also announced.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan expressed the city’s gratitude to the survivors who helped in the search and rescue of trapped people during the July 1990 killer earthquake and offered prayers to those who suffered and perished during the said disaster, the worst that hit Baguio City.

Domogan also reminded the people of Baguio of their own duties and responsibilities on disaster preparedness saying that disaster comes without prior notice.

He also highlighted the importance of continuing camaraderie and teamwork as he lauded the various civic groups who always partner with the city government. He mentioned the volunteer groups of Philex Mines and Lepanto Mines, that have been vital in rescue operations during the killer quake.

The 7.8 magnitude Luzon killer earthquake struck at around 4:26 p.m. of July 16, 1990. An estimated 1,621 people were killed in the earthquake mostly in Pangasinan, Baguio City, and Nueva Ecija. (JDP/CCD and Jamene Terceño-PIA CAR))
