QUEZON CITY, July 31 -- Interior and Local Government Secretary Ismael ‘Mike’ D. Sueno has assured the Office of the Vice President (OVP) that decongestion of some jail facilities is one of the top concerns that the Department will address.Sueno and Vice President Maria Leonor Robredo met recently at the VP’s office in Quezon City after the latter expressed her concern regarding the overcrowded and cramped prisons, particularly those in the urban areas.During the meeting, the DILG Secretary said that he has instructed the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), an attached agency of the DILG, to review the cases of inmates and facilitate the immediate commutation of their sentences in accordance with Republic Act 10592 and other existing laws.RA 10592 amended certain provisions of the Revised Penal Code and provides Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) credits to good-behaving prisoners.Under the scheme, an inmate can earn credits for good conduct and behavior, which can then be allocated to the commutation of their sentence while the case is pending in court.“This is one of the moves to help decongest the jails but more should be done,” he said.The DILG Secretary t ...Read more
