KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato Oct 9 (PIA) -- Barangay officials here have decided to comply with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) resolution requiring the barangays to contribute funds for the conduct of barangay polls on October 28.
City Election Officer Evangeline Basan told local media that the Association of Barangay (ABC) President Sagin Monday has confirmed that the 27 barangay councils in the city has decided to pay the amount required by the poll body.
This, she added, after the Commission on Audit (COA) 12 explained to the ABC through a letter that there would be no hitches with their disbursement of funds should they shell out at least P10,000 from the local funds for the said purpose.
Per Comelec Resolution No. 9739 promulgated on July 10, local government units are required to contribute at least P10,000 but not more than 10 percent of their general funds.
The funds will be used to augment the P1.7 billion allocation of Comelec approved by the Congress for the 2013 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections. The resolution was released before the Congress’s decision to postpone the SK election.
The same resolution elaborated that the funds will be spent for the P500 transportation allowance and additional honoraria of the members of the Board of Election Tellers as well as for trainings and meeting.
“The amounts shall be released by the LGUs to the Election Officers. For this purpose, field officials of the Commission are directed to extend cooperation and assistance in the disbursement of these amounts,” it continues.
Basan said the barangay councils have until October 18 to remit their shares.
She pointed out further that after the deadline, they will submit to Comelec Central Office a list of barangays that paid their required shares and those that failed to comply with the order. (DEDoguiles-PIA 12)
