TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, May 21 (PIA) -- The Department of Education (DepEd) in Eastern Visayas is set to launch “Brigada Eskwela” for School Year 2013-2014 on May 20-25.

Rebecca Ragrag, DepEd assistant regional director, said “Brigada Eskwela,” also known as National Schools Maintenance Week, is a school maintenance program enjoining all education stakeholders to contribute their time, effort and resources in ensuring that public school facilities are ready for the upcoming school opening.

Teachers, parents, students, community members and other organizations work together to do minor repairs and clean-up their schools in preparation for the coming school year.

The 5-day activity aims to spare school children from using their time and effort to clean the school surroundings once they report for classes.

"Brigada Eskwela" which started in 2003 was part of DepEd’s "Balik Eskwela" Program and National Maintenance Week.

DepEd announced that this school year, public elementary and high school classes start on June 3 and will end on March 31, 2014. It was also clarified that while private schools may deviate from the school calendar, such schools cannot start the year earlier than June 3 and not later than August 31.

Any deviation from the school calendar needs advance notification of the appropriate DepEd office. (AJC/EPT/PIA-8)
