TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, March 3 (PIA) – United Nations Special Representative, Secretary General Margareta Wahlstrom of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction visited Tacloban last Sunday.
Wahlstrom together with her party, was welcomed by Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez with whom she had a brief talk about Yolanda and response.
The group of Mayor Romualdez and SRGS Walhstrom visited Manlurip at San JoseDistrict and had a walk in the UNDP funded Global Dirt group, the biggest deployment of cadaver retrieval operations underway in Tacloban’s coastal areas which is currently scouring the badly hit debris scattered areas of Tacloban.
From Manlurip, San Jose, the group visited the Tacloban Astrodome, one of the evacuation centers here in Tacloban.
They drove through old-road Sagkahan-Magallanes-Pampango with a brief stop in Magallanes at the back part of the San Fernando School at Brgy. 52 area.
The group then proceeded to the city Mayor’s Boardroom, for a meeting with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and for the Lunch.
SRSG Wahlstrom was briefed by the CDRRMO regarding the City’s Emergency and Disaster preparations for Yolanda, the group discussed the protocols to be observed.
Challenges faced in the light of the magnitude of Yolanda, Lessons learned and Recommendations were also discussed.
By 2:30pm the group of Wahlstrom and Mayor Romualdez visited the three areas where the temporary shelters were located in Caibaan (NHA Bunkhouse Community) in Maharlika (IPI Bunkhouse Community) and the Abucay Bunkhouse.
The group also passed through the Abucay Terminal They also visited the Basper/Holy Cross the gravesite and where all human remains of Yolanda victims recovered in Tacloban city since Yolanda struck are being processed individually for possible identification and with individual tagged graves.
The group’s last stop was the Tacloban City dumpsite and the Northern area of the city which will house the permanent relocation site.
Wahlstrom and mayor Romualdez together with Undersecretary Naderev Sano of the Climate Change Commission then attended a press conference with local, national and international Media.
In a statement Wahlstrom said that the big challenge now in Tacloban is the planning for the future, the priority, the shelter and the economy to make it up and running and to make the city services normal and running.
“ I think what the mayor and his team doing now, together with the many organizations Filipino and international organizations and the national government is an important process now of planning and ensuring that the resources are there to be able to move forward,” said Wahlstrom.
