QUEZON CITY, July 17 (PIA) ---- The Department of Health (DOH) – Mimaropa is expanding the region’s resources to deal with severe illegal drug addiction cases.

Officials from DOH-Mimaropa and local governments recently gathered in Bansud, Oriental Mindoro for the groundbreaking rites of the Mimaropa Regional Drug Rehabilitation and Treatment Center.

DOH-Mimaropa Regional Director Eduardo Janairo said that the Php600 million facility will serve as the prime rehabilitation and recovery center for drug surrenderers of the five provinces of Mimaropa. "It will serve to augment the on-going community-based rehabilitation programs that are being facilitated by provincial and local government units”, Janairo said.

The Rehab Center is expected to service at least 500 patients.

At present, the country has 50 similar rehabilitation facilities: at least three centers are out-patient centers while the rest are residential according to the Dangerous Drugs Board.

Director Janairo said Mimaropa has 15 DOH-accredited physicians who run drug rehabilitation programs across the region: 6 in Palawan; 3 in Marinduque; 3 in Romblon; 2 in Occidental Mindoro; and 1 in Oriental Mindoro.

“Most cases can be treated in out-patient centers but not all of these drug surrenderers can be admitted to community based-rehab programs. Those that will be assessed and needing in-patient rehabilitation will only be admitted to the rehab center. That is why they must undergo the screening and assessment process,” Director Janairo said.

As of June 30, 2017, there are 20,910 drug surrenderers in Mimaropa. Out of that number there are 7,805 who were screened and assessed. (LP/DOH-Mimaropa)
