TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, May 10 (PIA) - - The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) here is expected to produce at least 5 million seedlings to be planted in the 5,644 hectares provincewide this year.

"This is part of the Enhanced National Greening Program (ENGP) that we implement this year," said forester Marlon C. Agnar, PENR officer here.

Agnar said they have already started producing seedlings of different species such as timber, fruit-bearing species, coffee, cacao and mangroves.

He said the mechanized seedling production area in Solana town could even produce more than enough the required number of seedlings to be planted in the identified sites this year.

“We will start planting as soon as the summer season is over to ensure the high survival rate of the seedlings to be planted,” Agnar said.

Wagayway Agatep, supervising environment management specialist, said there were already 990 peoples’ organizations (POs) which signified their intent to forge partnership agreement with PENRO as project-implementers.

Agatep said aside from being partner in the project, the POs will be given incentives to nurture the plants and be given the privilege to harvest its fruits and anything of value from the planted trees. (ALM/OTB/PIA-Cagayan)
