Baguio City, Ifugao join ASEAN Landmark Lighting

BAGUIO CITY, Aug. 8 (PIA) -- The city government of Baguio and the Philippine Information Agency – Cordillera will spearhead the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) 50th anniversary celebration in the country’s Summer Capital today.

The   ASEAN golden anniversary celebration will kick off with the ASEAN Flotilla at the Burnham Lake which features ASEAN -inspired government employees aboard boats bearing     ASEAN -member country flags and the ASEAN logo at the famous lake at 5PM today. At the center stage is the ASEAN 2017 logo, the primary symbol of this year’s ASEAN summits and the Philippine as chair.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources –Cordillera Regional Director Ralph Pablo, who will lead the 10 men and women in ASEAN- inspired clothes, will formally open the program.  He will be aboard a boat representing the Philippines.

 National Capital Region Police Regional Office Public Information Office Chief PCInsp. Kimberly Molitas will deliver the keynote message focusing on the ASEAN gains on peace and security at the international and national level within the ASEAN context and related updates.

Molitas is a native of Kibungan, Benguet and a known speaker on the ASEAN Political- Security Community that promotes the principle of comprehensive security, and commits to address the broad political, economic, social and cultural aspects of building an ASEAN Community.

The program at the lake will culminate with the boat parade.  

After the program proper, participants of the Flotilla and the audience will walk from the Burnham Park to the Baguio City Hall to be led by Cordillera cultural groups and the Police Regional Office - Cordillera Band.

At 6:30PM, a cultural performance by the Baguio City National High School Special program for the arts will open the program.

This will be followed by the symbolic lighting ceremony of the ASEAN Lantern and the Baguio City Hall to be led by Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan and other city officials at 7PM.

Meanwhile, the local government unit of Banquet, Ifugao, home to the centuries-old Ifugao rice terraces, will also join the simultaneous 50th ASEAN Grand Celebration and Landmark Lighting.

Banaue officials led by Mayor Jerry Dalipog and the other line agencies in Ifugao will lead the landmark lighting ceremony at 7PM.  There will be cultural performances and community dancing in the program at the Banaue Multipurpose Gymnasium.

The ASEAN 50 Ceremonial Lantern Lighting is a centerpiece of one of the major celebrations commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the ASEAN. The said ASEAN milestone coincides with the Philippines’ Chairmanship of ASEAN 2017.

The Landmark Lighting will be held simultaneously with ASEAN- member states and 74 local government units across the Philippines. The event is a symbolic gesture that expresses the theme of the ASEAN 50 festivities, “Under one Light, we are one ASEAN.” (JDP/RMC & UC Interns/ PIA CAR)
