CALAMBA CITY, Laguna, August 11 (PIA) – “Sa ating paglahok sa enggrandeng pagdiriwang na ito, o simpleng pagdiriwang, ating ipinakikita ang ating pagkakaisa sa simulain at gawain ng ASEAN,” Vice Mayor Arnold B. Arcillas said, expressing their city’s support in the goals and activities of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) during their ASEAN Landmark Lighting Activity last August 8.

In the light of the ASEAN 50th Anniversary Celebration, Sta. Rosa City took part in the simultaneous ASEAN Landmark Lighting Ceremony by lighting up their once gloomy and unembellished Arch.

The 6-ft lantern that bears the ASEAN logo was placed dangling on the City’s historic Arch and the arch’s linings was adorned with lights which emphasized its curves and edges. An employee of Sta. Rosa City hall said it was the very first time it was decorated and illuminated, the reason why people were overjoyed and amazed.

The Sta. Rosa Arch was once orginally situated in the city’s original fortress in 1859, but the fortress was renovated in 1925. In 1931, the arch was relocated to the Rizal Blvd where it now stands, Vice Mayor Arcillas briefly narrated.

“Ipinapakita natin sa pagsindi ng ilaw ng arko ng Sta. Rosa na tayo ay nangunguna sa pagbibigay ng liwanag sa bansa at sa buong rehiyon ng Southeast Asia,” he emphasized, saying this activity goes to show that as the Arch lights up the street in their city, the City itself is in the same way a forerunner in giving light to the country and the whole Southeast Asian Region.

“In celebration with the theme ‘Under One Light,’ kaya po papailawin natin ang arko natin, ’We Are One ASEAN’ (this program) is held simultaneously in the capitals of the ASEAN member states. Joining them are 74 local government units in the Philippines in their respective landmark lighting program,” he said.

He told his constituents that the ASEAN is an organization that aims to support its member states in terms of economic, social, and cultural aspects; and the reason for the gathering was to commemorate its success over the past 50 years.

“Moving forward to a more thriving future ahead of us through this partnership and as one of the premiere cities of the country, the City of Sta. Rosa will always be supportive of the country’s participation in the ASEAN,” he finished.
