CALAMBA CITY, Laguna, July 17 (PIA) – With the goal to protect consumers’ right to quality products and to reinforce the laws upholding this right, the Department of Trade and Industries  Region IV-A (DTI IV-A) and the DTI-Consumer Protection Group’s (CPG) Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau (DTI-FTEB) united in dispersing enforcement teams to different areas in Laguna to conduct inspections on various retailing establishments last July 6.

The  teams checked and scrutinized if specific critical construction materials, electrical products, and chemical and consumer products are compliant to the requirements of the Philippine National Standards (PNS).

Enforcement activities were conducted in order to assess the compliance of retailers within the province with the Fair Trade Laws such as the Republic Act (R.A.) No. 4109 or the Standards Law, R.A. No. 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines, and R.A. No. 7581 or the Price Act.

As R.A. No. 4109 or the Standards Law reads, it is an act formed a bureau – the Bureau of Standards converted from formerly being the Division of Standards under Bureau of Commerce – that has both power and duty to establish product standards, inspect and certify inspections and standards, fix and collect fees for inspection and certification, and undertake official investigations  for cases of non-compliance, among many others.

On the other hand, R.A. No. 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines constitutes the country’s policy to protect the interest of the consumers, promote their general welfare and to establish standards of conduct for business and industry.

Finally, R.A. No. 7581 or the Price Act indicates its provision of protection to consumers by stabilizing the prices of basic necessities and prime commodities, and by prescribing measures against undue price increases during emergency situations and similar occasions.

By ensuring that the retail sellers were complying with these laws on fair and just trade, DTI IV-A and DTI-FTEB upholds its mission to empower the consumers as they guarantee good quality items worthy of the Filipino citizen’s hard-earned money. (GG/DTI IV-A/RJG)
