SAN FERNANDO CITY, July 14 (PIA) – The Department of Education (DepEd) in Ilocos reiterates that no field trips will be allowed this school year.

Darius Nieto, regional information officer of the DepEd Region 1, said that Education Secretary Leonor Briones has earlier issued Memorandum No. 47, series 2017.

“It was a decision reached in consultation with regional directors in a meeting with our Secretary,” Nieto said.

He added, “The memorandum formalizes the moratorium on educational field trips and other similar activities following the tragic bus accident in Tanay, Rizal involving college students last February.”

The moratorium seeks to review existing policies and to harmonize the implementing details of regions to cover alignment of field trips to learning outcomes, security and safety, responsibilities and accountabilities not only of schools but also of parents and of other relevant government agencies.

As the primary institution mandated to ensure access to quality basic education, Nieto said it is imperative for the Department to look after the security and safety of learners in its education-related activities.

He also stressed that field trips are not mandatory and that schools are ordered to refrain from conducting punitive activities that may affect the academic standing of students who are unable to join.

The moratorium applies to both public and private elementary and secondary schools.

“The moratorium is in effect until such time that a new policy on field trip has been issued,” said Nieto.  (JNPD/MPA/PIA-1, La Union)
