SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte, Aug. 10 (PIA) - The Army's 30th Infantry "Python" Battalion (30IB) won for the first time the Caraga Regional Search for Gawad KALASAG (KAlamidad at sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang kaligtasan) for the Government Emergency Response Management GEMS Category.
Gawad Kalasag is the country's premier annual award for outstanding contributions in the fields of disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) and humanitarian assistance.
Lt. Col. Allen Raymund Tomas, commanding officer of the 30IB, received the KALASAG Plaque of Recognition and cash prize worth P50,000 that will be used for DDRM related activities from the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Caraga Region during the awarding ceremony and culmination of the National Disaster Resilience Month celebration held at Almont Resort, Butuan City.
Lt. Col. Tomas said the award is very significant for it has recognized their efforts in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief. “It is true that the Army is not only dedicated in securing our territories but also devoted in selfless service to the Filipino people,” he said.
Civil Military Operations Officer 2nd Lieutenant Jonel Castillo said the award would not be made possible without the supportive efforts of their counterparts from the local DRROs of Surigao City and Surigao del Norte who became their partners in rescue operations during different calamities in the province.
The army unit, which has its area of operation in the province of Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands, will be representing Caraga region in the National Search for Gawad KALASAG this year. (30IB-Philippine Army/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
