BAUANG, La Union, Aug. 3 (PIA) – More than 70 local government units in the country will join the simultaneous landmark lighting on Aug. 8 as part of the grand celebration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) 50th founding anniversary which the Philippines is hosting this year.

The momentous event bears the theme “Under One Light, we are One ASEAN.”

In La Union, Bauang officials will lead the simultaneous lighting of the ASEAN lantern and four popular landmarks here.

The landmarks include the Saints Peter and Paul Church, the municipal building, welcome arc in Urayong, and the Bauang Island, where the ASEAN lantern will be hung.

The ASEAN Landmark Lighting in this town and select cities and municipalities nationwide will all be conducted at exactly 7 p.m. and it will be synchronized with the lighting ceremony at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex in Pasay City.

“This is a significant occasion to let the people know what ASEAN is all about, its importance and benefits,” Myrna Romero, municipal information officer, said.

She added, “ASEAN is very important because it has paved ways for the development of this region especially in the economic and peace situation of our country and the realization of the visions of the member countries including that for the people themselves.”

Before the landmark lighting, there will be a program and cultural performances to be presented by the Bauang Baggak Choir, Don Eulogio de Guzman Memorial National High School, Sacred Heart School, Eulogio Clarence de Guzman Vocational Memorial National High School, and Paringao National High School in front of the Saints Peter and Paul Church.

The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region 1, as part of its ASEAN advocacy, will also join the activity by staging a fashion show of the national costumes of the 10 ASEAN Member States.

Aside from Bauang in La Union, Laoag City and the provincial government of Ilocos Norte and the local governments of Dagupan and Binalonan in Pangasinan will also have their respective landmark lighting programs. (JNPD/JDS/PIA-1, La Union)
