Mayor Beng underscores importance of security in ASEAN

ZAMBOANGA CITY, August 9 (PIA) – Mayor Beng Climaco, in her ASEAN landmark lighting message last night at the City Hall extolled the members of the security sector for their courage and dedication in promoting peace and security in the city, and cited it also  as an effort in securing the ASEAN communities themselves.

“We have to honor the women and men of the security sector who are continuously defending the Philippine Flag so that the ASEAN region will be protected,” she said.

Last night, August 8, Zamboanga City was selected as one of the cities to have a ceremonial landmark lighting of the 110-year-old City Hall building. The city joined in the commemoration of the ASEAN’s 50th anniversary through cultural numbers, to include the lighting of the ASEAN lanterns.

Mayor Climaco shared that in a recent ASEAN forum for mayors, she realized that one of the main priorities of the ASEAN is transborder cooperation and security. “Incidentally, these two things are the priorities of our administration in Zamboanga,” the mayor said, “it is very vital towards progress and the safety of everyone.”

Meanwhile, the mayor encouraged everyone to “always honor the different beliefs, tribes, religion in our city” to maintain peace and unity amidst diversity.  (ALT/DIS/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
