ILOILO CITY, July 11 (PIA6) ---   The City Health Office here advised parents and guardians not to allow their children to wade in floodwaters to prevent them from contracting leptospirosis.

CHO chief Dr. Bernard Caspe said the public should take precautions against the threat of diseases such as leptospirosis amid the rainy season.

Leprospitosis is a bacterial disease acquired by humans through direct contact with the urine of infected animals, particularly rats, or by contact with contaminated water, soil and plants.

“One must wear boots or cover broken skin or open wounds to reduce the risk of contracting leptospirosis,” he said.

He said that wading in floodwaters also poses threats of fungal and other skin infections.

The symptoms of leptospirosis include fever, muscle pain, headache, eye pain, and chills.

Severe cases result to liver involvement, kidney failure or brain involvement.

Some cases may have yellowish body discoloration, dark-colored urine and light stools, low urine output, severe headache.

Casiple said that health centers are equipped with medications for leptospirosis including doxycycline and prophylaxis.

He said that during the rainy season when there is flooding, it is a standing order to provide prophylaxis and doxycycline to all residents who have submerged in floodwater.

He also advised the public to immediately seek doctor’s consultation when they are experiencing signs and symptoms of leptospirosis. (jcm/LTP/PIA-Iloilo)
