JICA, PTV ink cooperation to promote cultural exchange, educational programs

  • July 15, 2017

MANILA, July 15(PIA) – To further promote cultural exchange, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and People’s Television Network Inc. (PTNI) recently signed a cultural grant aid project to help boost cultural exchange and educational programs in the Philippines through television.

“We aim to promote educational television programs and documentaries to Filipino audience, while also strengthening cross-cultural understanding between Japanese and Filipinos,” said JICA Chief Representative Susumu Ito.

According to JICA, the project "Improvement of TV Programs of National Broadcaster in the Philippines" includes airing of 687 educational and cultural programs from Japan, including shows that promote disaster awareness based on Japan’s experiences, math and science education, traditional sports in Japan, environment awareness, and Japan-Philippines relations. The programs are also dubbed in English.

Said project is a cultural grant aid that JICA has provided to the Philippines to help promote mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and partner countries through culture and education.

JICA also underscored that since the Philippines adopted the Integrated Service Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (ISDB-T) in 2010 using Japanese technology, the television programs are high-definition images and could therefore help promote sustained disaster awareness in the country. In ASEAN, countries like the Philippines are shifting from analog to digital broadcasting that allows people even to receive broadcasting transmission not only through television but also mobile phones.

The JICA-PTNI project is under the JICA grant aid scheme which is a type of official development assistance (ODA) extended to Japan’s partner countries without obligation of repayment. (JICA/RJB/JEG/PIA-NCR)
