Isang milyong puno kada taon hanggang 2022, itatanim ng MWSS sa Ipo Dam

NORZAGARAY, Bulacan, Hulyo 15 (PIA) -- Aabot sa limang milyong puno ang ipapatanim ng Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System o MWSS hanggang sa taong 2022 na katumbas ng isang milyong puno kada taon.

Upang matiyak na magkatotoo ito, sinimulan na ang pagtatanim ng isang milyong puno ngayong taon sa paglulunsad ng Annual Million Tree Challenge sa Ipo Dam, na siyang daluyan ng tubig na pinakakawalan ng Angat Dam Watershed.

Simula rin ito ng paghahanda ng nasabing government owned and controlled corporation o GOCC sa nalalapit na pagdiriwang ng ika-140 taong anibersaryo sa Pebrero 18, 2018.

Sinabi ni MWSS Administrator Reynaldo Velasco na bukod sa siguradong suplay na tubig, ang pagtatanim ng milyung milyong puno ay pamumuhunan din para tiyaking may maiinom na malinis at ligtas na tubig ang susunod na henerasyon ng mga Pilipino.

Nagsisilbi ring tugon ito bilang proteksyon sa lumalakas na mga kalamidad dahil sa nagbabagong klima.

Balak namang isali sa tataniman ng milyung milyong puno ang palibot ng Umiray Transbasin, Angat Dam, La Mesa Dam, Marikina riverbank at ang lawa ng Laguna.

Ipinaliwanag ni Velasco na hindi lamang dapat umaasa sa sahod-ulan ang mga dams kundi mula sa natural na pinanggagalingan ng tubig sa bundok, ang mga katas ng mga ugat ng mga puno.

Sa siyentipikong paliwanag, naipepreserba ang imbak na tubig sa mga dams dahil sa patuloy na pagkatas ng mga ugat ng puno. Kung marami ring nakatanim na puno sa bundok, mapapanatiling nakakapit ang mga lupa sa bundok na hindi matitibag na magdudulot ng pagbabaw ng mga dams.

Nangako naman ang Manila Water ng 120,000 mga punong itatanim sa La Mesa Dam na sasaklaw sa 300 ektarya ng watershed habang 150,000 ang pangako ng Maynilad.

Ang Manila Water at Maynilad ay pawang mga pribadong sektor na nakakuha ng konsesyon nang isapribado ng pamahalaan ang operasyon ng transmisyon at distribusyon ng MWSS noong 1997.

Saklaw ng Maynilad ang kanlurang bahagi ng Metro Manila habang sagot ng Manila Water ang silangang bahagi nito.

Ang MWSS, bagamat nananatiling GOCC, ay regulasyon na lamang ang papel o pagbabantay sa serbisyo ng mga pribadong konsesyonariyo. (CLJD/SFV-PIA 3)
