LAOAG CITY, July 10 (PIA) – The Provincial Nutrition Action Office (PNAO) in Ilocos Norte launched this year’s National Nutrition Month celebration through a live radio guesting at the Philippine Information Agency’s (PIA) “Pannakiuman, Isyu ken Aksion” (Talk, Issue, and Action).

Elma Irapta, nutrition action officer, said this year’s theme dubbed as “Healthy Diet, Gawing Habit For Life,” is centered in the promotion of healthy diet as part of everyone’s daily lifestyle.

“We want to inform the public about the difference of healthy and unhealthy foods and good food choices so that they know what kind of food to choose in the market,” said Irapta.

She also discussed on-air the set of activities planned by the local nutrition committee and its plan to conduct nutrition management training with the municipal nutrition officers to address malnutrition.

According to Irapta, obesity is also one of the issues that the local council wants to address in this year’s celebration.

In her discussion, malnutrition does not only equate to being underweight or wasted but obesity or overweight is also one kind of malnutrition that is alarming nowadays.

“With the presence of fast foods and other artificial foods that are readily available in the market, parents fail to monitor healthy diet of their children,” said Irapta.

To address this, she urged the farmers, manufacturers, and food establishments to provide healthier food especially for the kids.

She also appealed to the lawmakers to pass policies advocating healthy diet among Filipinos.

After the program, Irapta thanked the PIA for being an active chairman of the Provincial Nutrition Council and for supporting programs and services of the PNAO.

“Actually, this is our launching program of nutrition month in the province and we believe that this radio program has a wide reach to disseminate this celebration,” said Irapta. (JNPD/CJDG/PIA-1, Ilocos Norte)
