Teleserye puts spotlight on Davao’s cacao industry

DAVAO CITY May 16 (PIA)- A television drama series or teleserye shot in Davao City aims to put the spotlight on the cacao industry of the region.


Produced by television network GMA, the teleserye titled “I Heart Davao” is set in Davao City inside a cacao plantation. The main characters portraying cacao plantation owners.


The teleserye stars reel and real-life couple Tom Rodriguez and Carla Abellana who plays Ponce and Hope respectively. Ponce is a son of a cacao farmer whose plantation is being acquired by the family of Hope, a Manilena hoping to bring improvements to the farm.


The location of the shoot is the Puentespina Farms, a cacao plantation which produces the renowned Malagos chocolate that has won international awards in Britain and Germany. The farm is one of the purveyors of single origin chocolates where cacao harvested in its farm is processed into chocolates within its premises.


Apart from cacao production the Puentespina Farm is also engaged in cacao farm tourism, the farm and the nearby family-owned Malagos Garden Resort is open to tourists and visitors. The centerpiece of the resort is the Malagos Chocolate Museum, a modern interactive museum that focuses on chocolates and its origins.


Davao is the top cacao-producing region in the country as it produces about 80% of the cacao production of the entire nation.


Carla Abellana, one of the lead stars, says the production is as authentic as it can be as some of the actors or extras in the teleserye are actual cacao farmers.


“Hindi po kami nangagapa sa ginagawa naming or sa pananalita kasi we’re working alongside authentic farmers.” (We didn’t struggle with what we were doing or in our language because we were working with authentic farmers) Abellana said.


Tom Rodriguez one of the lead star also praised the talent of Davao actors whom he had worked in the series. “They were very, very good.” Rodriguez said.


The teleserye will be shown on June and also stars Benjamin Alves, Ricardo Cepeda, Betong Sumaya, Maey Bautista and Catherine Rem.
