  • April 19, 2017

DAVAO CITY April 19 (PIA)- President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to attend the launching of Cine Lokal a partnership between the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and SM Entertainment.

The launch will be held at the SM Mall of Asia this evening (April 19). This is President Duterte’s first attendance to a film-related event since his assumption into office.

Cine Lokal dedicates eight commercial cinema theatres of SM for screening of FDCP-curated films which includes award-winning independent movies.

"This reaffirms the government's support to the development of the Philippine cinema. We are confident that Cine Lokal is just the start of the government and the film industry coming together to further cultivate a culture of film appreciation that goes beyond entertainment value." FDCP Chair Liza Dino said

The eight SM cinemas include SM Mall of Asia, SM City North Edsa, SM Megamall, SM City Fairview, SM Southmall, SM City Iloilo and SM City Cebu.

According to Dino, Cine Lokal's goal is to provide independent filmmakers with a commercial venue for their films, thereby strengthening their experience and training on film marketing and distribution.

It also aspires to create a culture of support and viewership among Filipinos nationwide thereby addressing our goal of audience development, and to have a venue for educational discourse for the youth and for Philippine cinema that will further develop film literacy and film appreciation among our audience.

She also hopes the initial venture will be successful in which more SM cinemas would be added including Davao City.

The city where the President was the mayor for 21 years is one of the most active regional film centers in the country.

Dino says she is programming Davao films into Cine Lokal, included in the line-up of movies to be shown is the 2016 film “Baboy Halas.” (Wild Boar) which won the jury award in the 2016 QCinema International Film Festival. The FDCP chair is eyeing to include “Tu Pug Imatuy” (The Right To Kill) which won the 2017 Sinag Maynila Best Film award (PIA/RG Alama)
