Anti-jaywalking implementation nets 19,000 jaywalkers

  • April 18, 2017

DAVAO CITY April 18 (PIA)- The strict implementation of the anti-jaywalking ordinance in the city’s Comprehensive Transport and Traffic Code has netted 19,000 jaywalkers since it was implemented in December 2016.

Retired Police Superintendent Dionesio Abude, chief of the City Transportation and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) said the 19,000 jaywalkers were caught from the period December 2016 to March 31, 2017.

Abude said there about 2,000 pedestrian lanes or cross walks around Davao City where people can cross. The move against jaywalking is aimed at easing commuter flow along city streets and protecting the pedestrians.

However according to the CTTMO chief they have not collected the P100 fines yet as they have not printed the receipts. Those caught jaywalking are given lecture on the jaywalking ordinance.

The city would have earned P1.9 million from the jaywalking fines.

Abude said the city used to strictly implement the anti-jaywalking ordinance in the past, however since jaywalking was decriminalized many people have become lax in following the law.

The 1992 amendment of City Ordinance 778 amended in 1992 provided detention as one of the penalties for jaywalking and those caught will be charged with a criminal offense.

“Because of the that, people were afraid of the anti-jaywalking law.” Abude said. A succeeding amendment removed the criminal liability of the jaywalking offender.

Aside from marking cross walks, the city is also planning to build more pedestrian overpasses in areas with heavy foot traffic, identified areas include the Ateneo- Matina Town Square, Panacan, Redemptorist Church, Davao Doctors Hospital, Cabantian-Milan, Ulas Junction. (PIA/RG Alama)
