ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, May 18 (PIA) — Director General Harold E. Clavite of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) has expressed his appreciation to the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT)  in the latter's efforts at promoting public awareness on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 2017.

In a university forum that followed after the ASEAN Info Kiosk at MSU-IIT recently, Clavit said the partnership between MSU-IIT and PIA would push for a greater collaboration among universities to stir the country’s ASEAN 2017 awareness-raising campaign.

Clavite further said  the students and youth should explore ASEAN issues and trends in order to appreciate its importance to everyday life, and to feel what it means to be an ASEAN citizen because they (students and youths) nowadays symbolize the face of one’s culture and society.

“This ASEAN university forum is also a way to shed light on how we can avail of various benefits such as the opportunity to work in other ASEAN countries, to study and get scholarships, direct product exports, to invest & set up a business, and to have a “visa-free” entry in other ASEAN countries,” he stressed.

The university also hosted a “food-tasting” event showcasing ASEAN foods at the school plaza.

Forum participants were also entertained by the university in-house theater group, the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG).

ASEAN is a group of ten Southeast Asian countries namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, which aim is to speed up economic growth, social progress, cultural development, peace and stability, and provide opportunities for Member States to discuss differences peacefully.

Speaking to than 800 student leaders—including deans, professors, university officials, and local government executives—Clavite expressed his gratitude to MSU-IIT through Chancellor Sukarno Tanggol, for partnering with PIA in the conduct of an ASEAN university forum..

Clavite said this ASEAN awareness effort of the university is a historic milestone for MSU-IIT and PIA, as it coincides with putting up the country’s ‘50th ASEAN Info Kiosk’ inside the campus; while the 10 Member States also commemorate the 50th ASEAN Founding Anniversary in the Philippines with the theme “Partnering for change, Engaging the world.” (RLRBalistoy/PIA10, Bukidnon)
