CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, April 19 – City solon has sponsored a resolution urging President Rodrigo Duterte, as well as Senate and the House of Representatives to file needed legislations that will exempt senior citizens from paying individual income tax.
In his special report during the regular session presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, Councilor Ian Mark Q. Nacaya said those who are 60 years old and above are considered senior citizens and entitled to benefits such as 20-percent discounts in the purchase of medicines, goods, among others.
He cited that since the mandatory age of retirement is still 65 years old, there are some senior citizens who are still working with the city, the national government and private sector to support their families.
Funds intended for income tax payment will help them more, he added.
The councilor stressed that the tax exemption will benefit senior citizens, not only in the city and the island of Mindanao but all over the country.
Under Republic Act 9504, senior citizens are only exempted from payment of the individual income tax if they are minimum wage earners. (SP)
