Basilan State College hosts academic dialogue

Isabela City, Basilan June 30 (PIA) – More than 30 representatives from different sectors and agencies of the government and around 400 students from Basilan State College participated in the academic dialogue held on June 28 at Basilan State College (BaSC) Amphitheatre.


Basilan State College is celebrating its 33rd Founding Anniversary. Part of the celebration is the academic conversation “Pag-isun-isun” with the theme, Upholding Excellence, Reviving Commitment and Optimizing Human Capital Effectiveness: An open link to community stakeholders.


Pag-isun-isun has an objective to poll ideas and opinions relative to education. It envisioned assessing thoughts and encapsulating the views of government agencies and other stakeholders in the promotion of quality education, peace and security.


Dr. Nasser A, Salain, President of the Basilan State College said the event aims to facilitate meaningful discussions tackling the identified issues and concern to stimulate the minds of the academic stakeholders as sources of ideas and knowledge in taking appropriate steps to make education accessible and adaptable.


Education and the peace and development are two general issues discussed during the conversation.


In terms of education, problems on quality and access, mismatch in education with the demand of the industry, illiteracy and secular education and integration of peace education in all levels were tackled.


Participants from different sectors also shared their ideas on the present level of quality education in Basilan and identified some factors affecting the attainment of quality education which includes lack of human resources, and insufficiency in school facilities and equipment among others.


Speakers emphasized that the right to education is not only the right to access education but also the right to receive an education of good quality. Education must not only be available and accessible but also acceptable and adaptable. Indeed, the challenges in obtaining quality education require impeccable solutions that can be attained through proper coordination and partnerships not only to the government but to all stakeholders of every academic institution.


Peace and development issues which includes: human rights issues, terrorism and extremism, war against illegal drugs, stagnation of local economic development due to factors affecting peace, and local politics and its relevance to community improvement were also discussed. It came out that through deep understanding the quality education in the province is highly affected with the peace process in Mindanao.


Moreover, the police and military have committed in their responsibility to ensure security. They urged the youth and all DepEd officials not to be affected with the fake news and rumors on the alleged plans of the terrorist groups to attack the city.


During the conversation, participants realized that promoting peace is one way in promoting higher level of quality education.


A Memorandum of Understanding intended to facilitate, assist and legwork academic best practices and techniques, collaboration between partner agencies was signed by the participants. The Linkages formed has an objective to strengthen the mutual relationship between the partners in academic, research, extension, instruction and production relative to education.
