Historic Balangiga monument landmark, site of ASEAN lantern lighting activity

BALANGIGA, Eastern Samar, August 10 (PIA) - The ASEAN Landmark Lantern Lighting in Balangiga on August 8, 2017 was led by officials of the province and town officials of the municipality.

The historic Balangiga monument was the site of the lantern lighhting which signalled the start of the ASEAN golden year celebration.

The said landmark lightning of the ASEAN lantern was the highlight of thhe 50th ASEAN Grand Celebration, with the theme: “ Under One Light, We are One ASEAN.”

In his welcome message, Mayor Randy Graza said that, Balangiga is honored to be selected as one of the participating Local Government Units (LGUs) in this activity, although we are in the midst of preparation for our coming town fiesta on August 10, 2017.

“The burden of preparing for this event is most welcome to us, Mayor Graza said.”

He also thanked the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) the  provincial government of Eastern Samar for their all-out support and to everyone.

Meanwhile, DILG Local Government Operations Officer VI (LGOO-VI) of DILG, Provincial Field Office, Engr. Nida B. de la Cruz read the message of regional director Marivel Sacendoncillo which informed that the ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN which are  Indonesia, Malaysia,  the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. 

Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia became ASEAN members soon after, making up what is today the ten (10) Member States of ASEAN.

It further said, that "tonight’s lightings activity symbolizes our recognition of ASEAN’s critical role as the light that guides the path of the ten (10) ASEAN Member States as we pursue regional peace and security, prosperity and socio cultural development." 

“For the people of the Balangiga, this lighting of the Balangiga Encounter landmark is a fitting tribute as well as the Balangiga‘s place in our history,” Sacendoncillo said. 

The message emphasized that the Balangiga Encounter in 1901, regarded as one of the Filipino people’s bravest acts of war, deserve to be highlighted especially in these challenging times. "We need to draw inspiration from our forefathers who bravely fought against foreign invaders.  We need to highlight this story in the hope of inspiring our people to protect our land against present threats of disturbance, crime, terrorism and even poverty and underdevelopment."

The ASEAN was organized to promote inter-governmental cooperation in economic, social, cultural, technical and other critical fields.  It was created for the promotion of regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice, rule of law and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter. This purpose is captured in this year’s theme: “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World. 

The Landmark Lighting Activity is a significant event to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of  Association of South East Asian Nation (ASEAN) and to help contribute to raising the level of awareness of the public on the importance and benefits of the community.  (ajcSDC/PIA8-E.Samar)
