TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Aug. 9 (PIA) – A call to action by the city government converged all citizens of the highly urbanized Tacloban City to join in the 50th ASEAN LANDMARK LIGHTING on August 8, Tuesday, this year.
Despite the heat, the parade, set at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, saw school children clad in the colourful attires of ASEAN member countries line up proudly and be counted. Added to the cacophony of children, were the presence of administrators, mentors of schools and officials who were similarly clad with their students in assigned ASEAN country.
Government employees representing their agencies, barangay officials, civil society organizations and non-government organizations likewise participated in the half-day activity.
Participating agencies/entities were grouped according to an ASEAN member country where the representatives waved the flag of the country during the parade. Most of the employees-participants wore white t-shirts although others had t-shirts with ASEAN logos printed.
As mentioned during the program which followed the parade, ‘ASEAN nations maybe diverse in culture but bonded as one” because it’s the ASEAN way.
The 6-feet tall ASEAN designed lantern installed in the City Hall grounds was lighted at 7 o’clock in the evening simultaneously with the burst of fireworks. The Lantern Lighting signalled the launch of the ASEAN Golden Anniversary Celebration.
