Youths join first ever Inter-Municipality,City Basketball Tournament

BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar, April 19 (PIA) - The youths of the province of Eastern Samar is in a friendly basketball competition.


The sports competition is the first ever Inter-Municipality or City Basketball Tournament of the Eastern Samar Basketball League in coordination with the Provincial Government of Eastern Samar, the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP), Eastern Samar Chapter, the City Government of Borongan, the Eastern Samar Division and Borongan City Divison of the Department of Education (DepEd).  


The objectives of this basketball league are: to foster closer relationship and camaraderie among the youth in the province of Eastern Samar; to promote the value of sportsmanship and fair play among the youth in a friendly competition; to enhance value formation and love for sports, basketball in particular, and the building of a community of law-abiding citizens; and to develop basic skills and fundamentals in the game of basketball.


The competition began with a parade from Borongan City Plaza around the City proper with 21 municipal mayors and one City Mayor and other local officials leading the event.


In the program after the parade, the province’s lone congressman, Ben P. Evardone congratulated the participants led by the local chief executives (LCEs) and officials of the 21 towns and one city mayor, the respective team managers and coaches of the different municipalities and the City of Borongan.


“Your overwhelming cooperation on our invitation to join this Inter-Municipality or City Basketball Tournament of the Eastern Samar Basketball League is a true sign of your commitment to our advocacy against illegal drugs as has been adopted in this Tournament through its theme: “Bola Kontra Droga,”Evardone said.  


Rep. Evardone disclosed that he wants young people and the community to engage in sports and have a healthy lifestyle.


He further said that the main purpose of this league is to develop grassroots talent in the game of basketball.


Twenty two basketball teams involving 330 players are competing in the tournament.


The teams are supported by twenty two heads of delegation, LCEs, 22 Team Coordinators, 22 Team Managers, 22 Head Coaches, and 22 Assistant Coaches.


Eastern Samar has 22 municipalities and one city.


 The municipality of Maslog, the far flung municipality of the province was unable to join the sports competition.


The prizes at stake are: P 100,000.00 and a trophy – Grand Champion; P 50,000.00 and a trophy – first runner-up; P 30,000.00 and a trophy – second runner-up; and the third runner-up, P 20,000.00 and a trophy.
